How the calculation works

  1. It starts from a published base interval for your brush type. Complexion brushes get weekly, eye brushes fortnightly, dry powder brushes up to monthly, sponges after every use. Those tiers come from the guidance listed at the bottom of this page.
  2. Then it applies a ceiling for the product form. If a brush carries liquid or cream, the interval is capped at 7 days whatever its type. If it carries a mix, the ceiling is 14 days. Powders leave the head dry, which is why powder brushes get the most slack.
  3. Then it scales for skin type. Oily skin multiplies the interval by 0.7 and combination skin by 0.85, on the basis that more oil on the brush means more for the brush to hold.
  4. Then it halves for acne-prone skin. That is a precaution, not a proven treatment. Cleaning frequency was not significantly associated with reported skin problems in the survey data cited below, so treat the adjustment as hygienic caution rather than a fix.
  5. Then it scales for how hard the brush works. 21 or more uses a week multiplies by 0.6, 14 or more by 0.75, and 3 or fewer by 1.5. The floor is 1 day and the ceiling is 30.
  6. The last row shows every adjustment applied, so you can see which input moved the answer and disagree with it.

The base intervals, and where they come from

About the drying timeThe drying figure is derived from head size and bristle density, the two things that decide how much water a brush holds. It is a planning estimate, not a measured standard, because we could not find any study or regulator that publishes a drying time for makeup brushes. A damp bathroom, a dense head and a cold room all push it to the top of the range or past it. Check the base of the bristles against a tissue before you put the brush away: a brush that is dry on the surface can still be wet at the ferrule.

What the contamination research actually says

A study of 57 used brushes and blenders in Jeddah identified 71 bacterial strains, 81% of them Gram-positive, with Micrococcus, Staphylococcus and Bacillus the dominant families. A separate UK study of used cosmetic products found 79% to 90% contaminated, with beauty blenders carrying an average load above 106 CFU per ml. What those studies support is that used tools carry bacteria, including species associated with skin infection. What they do not support is the idea that a cleaning schedule cures acne: the NHS lists dirty skin and poor hygiene as a myth about acne causes, and in the Jeddah survey the association between cleaning frequency and reported skin problems was not statistically significant (p = 0.698).
